Wishtree

Picture
Author: Katherine Applegate
RU Level: 5th Grade

The Wishtree is a wise, old oak that watches over a neighborhood and hosts the wishes that are tied to its branches every spring. When a new family moves in and isn't welcome, the tree must intervene. Told from the perspective of the tree, the story is full of humor, heart and wisdom. It is interesting to see who it is that listens to the tree and is able to make the difference.

This is not only a current bestseller but will be a must read in years to come.

Refugee

Author: Alan Gratz
RU Level: Secondary

Refugee tells the story of three different young people fleeing their country with their families: one in 1938 from Nazi Germany, one in 1995 from Castro's Cuba and another in 2015 from war-torn Syria. Although the book is fiction, it is based on historical accounts and real people. This is a stunning portrayal of the plight of refugees and leaves one thinking, grateful and better informed. It is interesting to see how the three lives intertwine over time and people's reaction to the refugees. The Author's Notes at the end describes the relativity to our time and world.

A must read.
