Picture
 Author: Ben Guterson
RU Level: 5th Grade

Elizabeth comes home from school to find a locked house and a letter, a bus ticket, and three dollars taped to the front door from her uncaring aunt and uncle with directions to spend the winter holidays at a resort: Winterhouse. She finds Winterhouse to be wonderful but full of puzzling secrets and mysteries which she determines to solve. She finds a magical book in the library with puzzles and answers only she can see and is surprised to discover other unknown abilities. As the clues come together she discovers that she is connected to the mystery and the only one who can save the hotel and the people she has grown to love.

Suspenseful, full of charm, puzzles and word play and set in a place one wishes to visit. This is the first book in a trilogy so there will be more fun to come!

Humorous with great messages about handling bullies, recognizing and resisting labels, being comfortable with who you are and changing how one looks at things. Another great book by a popular author.

1/4/2019

Picture
Author: M.T. Anderson, Eugene Yelchin
RU Level: Secondary

The elfin historian, Brangwain Spurge, is sent,by catapult into the Goblin Kingdom to spy while under the guise of delivering a historical peace offering. An elf hasn't returned from this kind of mission in over 100 years! The goblin Werfel is assigned to be Brangwain's host. Are they friends? Are they enemies? Because of a series of extraordinary events these two find themselves in the middle of a war and certain death. Brangwain sends mind messages back to his elfin superior which are shown as consecutive  full page illustrations; however, the narrative of the same event described by Werful is not the same!

This book may be read on many different levels from a good, fun story to political satire. The use of conflicting illustrations/narrative provides a fun twist. Many believe that this book should have been the 2019 Newbery winner.

While suggested for secondary readers, some advanced middle-grade readers may enjoy the humor and illustration/text combination of the story without worrying about the deeper meaning. A little violence is described but is not graphic.

If you like. . . .

12/17/2018

Listed are a few of APA sixth grade students' well-liked books and suggestions for books like them to read next:

If you like Restart (by Korman), read Schooled (also by Korman).
Capricorn has led a sheltered life and been homeschooled his entire life by his grandmother--until she breaks her hip and Cap has to attend public school. As someone who has never had pizza, watched television, or other experiences with which the rest of his class is familiar, Cap is seen as "weird." As a cruel joke, the bullies of the school band together to elect him as their class president. How Cap handles this situation is what makes this a great, memorable read.

If you like Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow (by Townsend), read the sequel, Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow.
Read a review of this book here.

If you like The Wishmakers (by Whitesides), read the sequel, The Wishbreakers, coming out January 8, 2019.
There are a number of students eagerly awaiting this release. A review will be forthcoming!

If you like The Lost Prince (by Myklusch), read the sequel, Strangers in Atlantis.
Since accomplishing his mission for the Pirate King, Dean thinks his days of pirating are behind; however, when his friends are threatened he is forced to do one more job that involves the underwater city of Atlantis. The action of the first book continues at the same pace to a thrilling conclusion.

If you like Sky Jumpers (by Eddleman), read the sequel, The Forbidden Flats.
Due to an act of nature, the Bomb's Breath begins to lower over Hope's town. Hope and her friends must make a trip through the Forbidden Flats, escape the bandits living there, and get the only thing that will save them all. This sequel doesn't disappoint!

After Fiona and Finn O'Brien lose their psychologist father to a tragic accident they begin going to a dog shelter to work with some of the dogs there. The dogs help comfort them as they begin to heal and remember their father's words to turn into memories that will help them through their life.

This book is slow, sweet and touching with great advice and examples of children dealing with loss. While not for everyone, it will have a place with those who can relate to the circumstances of loss.

Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow

12/12/2018

Picture
Author: Jessica Townsend
RU Level: 6th Grade

The first book in the "Nevermoor" series, The Trials of Morrigan Crow, deserved all the accolades and awards it earned, including the Amazon Best Children's Book of the Year for 2017. While other books claim to be the next best thing to Harry-Potter, this fresh, creative series is the real deserver of the description.

The sequel, Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow had a lot to live up to and it doesn't disappoint. In fact, it may be even better than the first book!  With twist and turns leading up to a surprising ending, it paints a fantasy world like no other. So many of the APA 6th graders loved the first book. It will be exciting to see what they think of the next!

Unplugged

12/6/2018

Picture
Author: Steve Antony
RU Level: Kindergarten

Blip does lots of fun things on the computer; however, one day a black-out occurs and Blip stumbles outside. What?? There is more to do than is seen on a screen? What?? The world is filled with adventure and people and colors and . . . and . . . and . . .

Cute book that can spark a discussion on technology usage. The great illustrations also have things to say.  Good paired reading book.
