Granted

Author: John David Anderson
RU Level: 5th Grade

Did you know that every time a wish is made it is heard and might come true courtesy of a Granter? However, it requires a certain amount of magic which is running low. Ophelia goes out on her first wish-granting assignment and finds that it isn't as easy as she thinks.

"A wish is many things. It is hope and desire and daydreams. It is impossibility and improbability and something in between. It is stardust and well water and spectrums of light in the sky. It is half-melted birthday candles and Christmas lists. It is broken turkey bones. It is the willing suspension of disbelief. And sometimes it is desperation. It is a hole in your heart that wants filling."   Well said.

Although there is a girl and boy main character, girls will be drawn to this book.

Very charming and feel-good with a great empathetic message. This book has become a New York Times Notable Children's Book and the sequel is now a Best Seller.

Author: P.G. Bell
RU Level: 6th Grade

After Suzy sneaks aboard a train that mysteriously steams through her living room, she becomes the newest "Postie" who delivers unusual things to Impossible Places. When she finds one delivery is actually a boy trapped in a snow globe she takes him back on a whim and begins a chase that leads to some unexpected consequences with the fate of the Union in her hands.
Don't get bogged down with the physics references at the beginning, if that isn't your thing, because the action then starts to accelerate-- like a runaway train!  Great for girls who like fantasy and take-charge attitudes.
